what?
The Third Reich in Power. Bought in approximately early to mid January 2007 in the city of Hamburg, Germany. In English, it outlines the middle period of the Third Reich. After going on a Nazi Germany tour in Berlin on New Years Eve I thought it would be appropriate to continue learning about this subject whilst still in the country. The book is about 9 centimetres wide. Heavy. Of course I picked it up and thought to myself " Being the avid reader I am I'll get through this before I leave the continent for England again." Wrong. After a few solid attempts in my room in Hamburg and on the train rides that followed afterwards I realised that a text like this is not an easy read. Names, German names especially are not ones that stick in my mind so after trying to remember if Hugenberg was the same as Hindenburg for the 3rd time on one page it was with dismay that I started to waver on my journey to the end of this massive historical text. I bought a new book. Yes I am a piker. Worst still I'm lying to you, it wasn't even a book. It was fashion magazine after fashion magazine. But then eventually it was a new book. A Ben Elton from Bruge. It passed the time. But eventually The Third Reich in Power crept up on me. It called out to me. Just as it still calls out to me. SOPHIE, I'M ON YOUR SHELF NEXT TO YOUR DESK AND I'M STILL NOT FINISHED. It's true. I have to confess. Confess that out of 712 pages I've read 81. 81 lousy pages. But its like a freaking school book. I can't do it. I can't bring myself to. Richard J Evans I've failed you. You wrote books like this for bigheads like me who think they can read 700+ pages of history compiled into an intellectual looking book, but I've let you down. I've become a smart book jerk. Filling my bookshelves with books I haven't finished to try and look smart. But I do intend to fix the situation. Inbetween each Dostoevsky and Oscar Wilde, I'll put a Roald Dahl and J.K. Rowling just to remind myself that at heart I'm a silly childish reader, rather than the jerky nerd I try to be.
