The Life of Riley

Drapht fans will relish in the local references and talent that he’s brought together on his latest offering, The Life of Riley but this is not album designed purely for Drapht fans. He’s created the same radio-friendly vibe that 2008’s Brothers Grimm delivered, but those looking for another Jimmy Ricard be warned- Jimmy Ricard is dead. What’s definitely not dead is Drapht’s knack for creating an album laced with smirk-worthy lyrics and killer beats. When you list the styles that he’s dabbled with here it reads like it shouldn’t work, the 60’s tinge on Rapunzel, the heavy guitars on Air Guitar, the Ska beats on Murder Murder, but somehow he pulls it off. With a finger well and truly up at “Those rats that called me wigger”, Life of Riley cements Drapht as a reliable and fresh contributor to the ever-expanding Aus hip-hop scene. Maybe’s its time Drapht realised that ‘Plain-Old-Boring-Old-Paul’ isn’t plain or boring at all.
